Curb Ramps
Comply with ADA Ramp Requirements without Hassle

The civil law approved by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits construction sites from discriminating between disabled and non-disabled people. That is why builders must build safe ramps for the disabled in commercial and public properties. ADA has set guidelines for this process that need to be followed.

However, getting accurate manual measurements can be challenging. That is why you should use Cartigraph’s data collection tool, as it is easy to use and takes very little time. The operator makes measurements by walking with the Cartigraph application device, and our software instantly calculates these measurements and creates the report.

So, Cartigraph’s ADA data collection software has digitized the entire process of ramp specifications

Ensure your ADA Requirements for Ramps are Fulfilled

Building ADA-specified ramps is a challenging process. But now, you can easily measure and create a perfect ADA ramp without the hassle of manually measuring everything. Cartigraph is a data collection software that allows you to gather exact measurements of ramps, sidewalks, slopes, and paths.

What is the ADA Checklist for Existing Facilities?

All new buildings and constructions are now liable to follow ADA requirements. Every building, regardless of age, has to be optimized to comply with the ADA requirements. The ADA has a checklist for existing facilities that owners must follow. This checklist states the following. All buildings must have:

  • Easily accessible entrances and exits
  • Open access to goods and services
  • Easily accessible public toilets
  • Access to other items such as a telephone
  • Safe access to relaxing points, such as parks or water fountains

The list of recreational facilities below must comply with the ADA checklist and provide disabled persons with easier access to these places:

  • Amusement parks and rides
  • Fishing lakes and facilities
  • Golf or other sporting facilities
  • Play areas
  • Boating facilities
  • Swimming or wading pools
  • Spas and saunas
  • Other fun-activity facilities

Cartigraph’s data collection software conveniently eases the compliance requirements if changes need to be made.

What is a Public Accommodation According to ADA?

According to ADA, public accommodation refers to any business including privately-owned entities used by the public. A public accommodation is owned or leased to accommodate the standard population by offering goods and services. In addition, anyone living in public accommodation quarters must make sure that the public accommodation follows ADA requirements.

Therefore, property owners and users need to remove hazardous elements and make public accommodation safe for disabled people. ADA declares the following properties as public accommodation:

  • Lodgings (must be renting at least six rooms)
  • Food and drinks serving establishments such as restaurants and bars
  • Entertainment and exhibition places
  • Public gathering places like auditoriums, conventions, and lecture halls
  • Sales or rental establishments
  • Service establishments such as laundromats
  • Public transport stations, depots, and terminals
  • Public exhibitions of art collections or other collections
  • Places of education
  • Recreational places such as zoos or amusement parks
  • Social service centers and hubs
  • Health-related venues like gyms, spas, health course providers

Cartigraph’s ADA data collection software allows users to survey and create a report on each public accommodation. Get our software now or request a free demonstration test drive.

What are the ADA Ramp Requirements?

According to specific ADA rules, construction workers must install ramps along all public routes. A ramp is any slope with a height change of more than ½ inch.  So any height change must follow ADA requirements. Every ramp has a specific ADA-approved condition that builders must follow at all times. These requirements are:

Slope and Rise

According to ADA, any ramp should slope at the least possible angle, and the maximum slope measurement should not exceed a ratio of 1: 12. The slope rise for any run should not exceed 30 inches (760mm). In case of space limitation, the approved ratios are:

  • 1: 10 maximum with 6 inches maximum rise
  • 1: 8 maximum with 3 inches maximum rise

Clear Width

Clear width is the distance between walls and other fixed obstructions. When designing the ramp, the clear width has to be a minimum of 36 inches (915 mm). Any ramp that has less than 36 inches width will not be approved. Cartigraph’s data collection software allows you to make precise measurements such as the clear width.

Landings

Ramps comprise horizontal sloped runs that are connected through level landings. According to ADA, ramps must include a level landing at the top and the bottom of the ramp and the ramp run. The specifications for these are:

  • Landings and loading ramps should be the same width—36 inches
  • The landing length should not be less than 60 inches
  • Ramps can change directions at the landing. However, those ramps must be 60 x 60 inches.

Cross Slope

A cross slope is a tilt in a horizontal surface such as a road, ramp, or highway that prevents water blockage. Water flows towards the lower surface, and so if the cross slope isn’t built correctly, the water will collect in the narrow space and become a health hazard. ADA allows a maximum slope ratio of 1: 48 for a cross slope.

Handrails

When the ramp rise is greater than 6 inches or horizontally projected and has an increased height of more than 72 inches, construction workers must install handrails on both sides of the ramp. Handrails can be avoided on curb ramps and ramps connected with assembly seating areas.

  • Handrails must have these features to pass an ADA inspection:
  • Handrails should be built on either side of ramps
  • The inside handrail on dogleg or switchback ramps is always continuous
  • If the handrails aren’t continuous, they should still be 12 inches long, continuously beyond the bottom and top of the ramp.
  • The handrails must be equidistant to the surface.
  • There must be a clear space of 1.5 inches (38mm) between the wall and handrail.
  • The gripping surface should be continuous.
  • Gripping surfaces of handrails should be mounted 34 inches (minimum) to 38 inches (maximum) above the ramp surface.
  • Handrails endings should be smooth, rounded, or directed towards the wall

Edge Protection

Drop-off landings and ramps must have walls, railings, projecting surfaces, or curbs to provide edge protection. It is essential to install any of these to ensure people don’t fall or slip sideways down the curb ramps. Therefore, the curb must be at least 2 inches high.

Outdoor Ramps

ADA ramp specifications stipulate that ramps need to be environmentally safe. They must not be slippery from rain or snow, and they should not collect stagnant water. If these specifications are manually performed, the process is complicated as every measurement is made by hand. Cartigraph’s digital software tool saves you time and effort in reaching these ADA specifications.

Why are ADA Specified Ramps Important?

ADA ramps are essential to keep disabled people safe from the danger of uneven land. ADA’s specified ramp requirements protect old or disabled people from accidents such as falling out of a wheelchair, slipping from scooters, or tripping while using a cane or walker when walking up or down a slope.

For these reasons, ADA strictly enforces these rules. Ramps that have already been installed need to be measured to ensure that they adhere to these guidelines. Cartigraph’s digital software can calculate all of these measurements with ease.

What is Cartigraph’s Data Collection Software?

Cartigraph’s ADA sidewalk assessment and data collection software records and streams data (cross-slope + running slope + GPS coordinates) of the area by simply walking across it. Our software uses intelligent and advanced technology to automate the data collection process.

You can easily collect all the ADA compliance data using our walking smart rovers paired with a GPS coordinate. Our software also collects data from running and crossing slopes. The person measuring the ramp criteria walks with our rovers across the required measuring area. Cartigraph automatically analyzes and records the correct measurements. It then sends these measurements to a protected cloud database, where the information is stored and processed into a report. Our software measures and calculates all the data and reports the correct numbers.

Why use Cartigraph’s Data Collection Software?

Using Cartigraph’s data collection software will be the best choice you will ever make. The benefits of using Cartigraph’s data collection software are:

Saves Time

Before our software was available, it was intensive work to measure sidewalks, paths, curbs, and ramps. Multiple agents were required to walk these places and measure everything. However, now you save 75% of surveying time due to our data collection software. In addition, you don’t have to measure things by hand because the software automatically processes every place’s measurements.

Automated Reports

It is unnecessary to spend time formulating extensive reports because our software takes care of it all without your input. It processes the information it receives during ADA sidewalk inspection and instantly starts composing a report. So, by the time you have completed the examination, the report is ready to use. This way, you don’t have to work extra hours creating and writing reports. Cartigraph’s ADA data collection software saves you both time and effort.

Secure Data Storage

The biggest drawback of manual measurements is that they are recorded on paper and can be misplaced, resulting in losses of all the collected data. However, Cartigraph’s ADA data collection software directly updates all the findings in a secure cloud database. You can never misplace data from the cloud unless you remove it yourself. Therefore, as long as you use Cartigraph ADA data collection software, you don’t need to worry about losing any critical data. You can instantly collect data and access it wherever and whenever you want.

Save Resources

You don’t need a team of people to operate Cartigraph’s data collection software. A person can use it to collect measurements from any part of the city. When these measurements are done manually, companies hire competent people and provide them with appropriate tools. But Cartigraph ADA data collection software saves you all of that trouble. Our software only needs one operator and no additional tools.

Accurate Results

Cartigraph ADA data collection software uses proximity motion sensors and accelerometers to produce an accurate and comprehensive report. A considerable margin of error may affect the results when manual measurements are used. However, Cartigraph’s data collection software ensures that you get accurate results and 100% error-free reports.

GPS Coordinates

Cartigraph’s ADA software has a built-in GPS that captures the exact location coordinates with timestamps at a rate of 3 readings per second. It is in sync with cross and running slopes and other readings, and it records measurements according to each location type.

Surface Evaluation

Our ADA data collection has multiple surface evaluation features, such as pictures and notes. You can quickly capture detailed images of surface conditions for later evaluation. With Cartigraph, you get to thoroughly examine whether a surface is vaulting, cracking, or obstructing. So, in addition to a report, you can evaluate pictures to achieve a better risk assessment.
