What are the ADA Ramp Requirements?
According to specific ADA rules, construction workers must install ramps along all public routes. A ramp is any slope with a height change of more than ½ inch. So any height change must follow ADA requirements. Every ramp has a specific ADA-approved condition that builders must follow at all times. These requirements are:
Slope and Rise
According to ADA, any ramp should slope at the least possible angle, and the maximum slope measurement should not exceed a ratio of 1: 12. The slope rise for any run should not exceed 30 inches (760mm). In case of space limitation, the approved ratios are:
- 1: 10 maximum with 6 inches maximum rise
- 1: 8 maximum with 3 inches maximum rise
Clear Width
Clear width is the distance between walls and other fixed obstructions. When designing the ramp, the clear width has to be a minimum of 36 inches (915 mm). Landings
Ramps comprise horizontal sloped runs that are connected through level landings. According to ADA, ramps must include a level landing at the top and the bottom of the ramp and the ramp run. The specifications for these are:

- Ramps can change directions at the landing. However, those ramps must be 60 x 60 inches.
Cross Slope
A cross slope is a tilt in a horizontal surface such as a road, ramp, or highway that prevents water blockage. Water flows towards the lower surface, and so if the cross slope isn’t built correctly, the water will collect in the narrow space and become a health hazard. ADA allows a maximum slope ratio of 1: 48 for a cross slope.
Handrails
When the ramp rise is greater than 6 inches or horizontally projected and has an increased height of more than 72 inches, construction workers must install handrails on both sides of the ramp. Handrails can be avoided on curb ramps and ramps connected with assembly seating areas.
- Handrails must have these features to pass an ADA inspection:
- Handrails should be built on either side of ramps
- The inside handrail on dogleg or switchback ramps is always continuous
- If the handrails aren’t continuous, they should still be 12 inches long, continuously beyond the bottom and top of the ramp.
- The handrails must be equidistant to the surface.
- There must be a clear space of 1.5 inches (38mm) between the wall and handrail.
- The gripping surface should be continuous.
- Gripping surfaces of handrails should be mounted 34 inches (minimum) to 38 inches (maximum) above the ramp surface.
- Handrails endings should be smooth, rounded, or directed towards the wall
Edge Protection
Drop-off landings and ramps must have walls, railings, projecting surfaces, or curbs to provide edge protection. It is essential to install any of these to ensure people don’t fall or slip sideways down the curb ramps. Therefore, the curb must be at least 2 inches high.

ADA ramp specifications stipulate that ramps need to be environmentally safe. They must not be slippery from rain or snow, and they should not collect stagnant water.
